Thrift Style Thursday: Nineties Nostalgia

Oh the 90's ~ a time of interesting fashion that is making a surprising comeback nowadays with crop tops and high waisted bottoms (not really a fan of either, haha).  I do like plaid though and a plaid top like the one below reminds me of the 90's.  Also check out these sweet shades that I found.  :)

This awesome mural is painted on the side of a cute little ice cream shop that opened recently a few blocks from where I live.  I love finding little gems like this around the city.  And even though cassette tapes were on their way out in the 90's, I thought it was cool that the mural had one!  I mean, what are the odds?  It was just too perfect for this week's theme.

An Old Skirt

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend!  We went camping over the weekend, and while the weather was gorgeous in Houston, it was rainy where we were northwest of Austin.  We ended up leaving a day early which was a bummer, but a flash flood warning is nothing to risk when you're camping!  Luckily it cleared up enough on Sunday afternoon for the Memorial Day festivities that they had at the park where we were staying.  It was a nice reminder of why we celebrate Memorial Day and gave us a chance to remember those that have served and are currently serving in the military.  I truly appreciate their sacrifices that allow us to have our freedoms.

Unfortunately it seemed the rain followed us home and it rained most of the day yesterday, so we stayed inside and caught up on TV shows.  It was very relaxing.

Interesting fact about this skirt: I got it back in middle school!  So let's see, that would date it to about 1997.  It's one of those pieces that I tend to forget about, but when I pull it out of my closet I'm always like why haven't I been wearing this more?!  I think I got it at Sears, and it must be decent quality because it's lasted about 17 years.  Gosh, I can't believe it's that old!

Thrift Style Thursday: Brilliant Blazers

Happy Thursday, friends!  This week's theme is the blazer.  I think this little Jackie O. style jacket that I found is considered a blazer. :)  It seemed only fitting that I wear some big Jackie O. sunglasses with it!  I found both this jacket and dress on my last thrifting trip.

My fave part about this outfit ~ it goes from work to evening out simply by removing the jacket!  I love the textured layers in this dress.

Be sure to check out all the other lovely ladies' blazer looks!

PS ~ I know many of you loved the ice cream clutch from this post.  Kate Spade is doing a 75% off sale and that clutch is available again at a great discounted price!

What I'm Wearing
Dress ~ Yoana Baraschi, thrifted
Jacket ~ J. Crew, thrifted

Peplum and Pattern Mixing

We had a mini cold front come through last week, but now I think the warm weather is here to stay.  It's definitely warm enough now to break out the shorts.  I went a little crazy with the pattern mixing in this outfit: striped shorts, floral top and leopard purse.  It's cool how it can all come together and create a cohesive outfit.  I've been playing around with pairing different patterns together lately.  It's fun to push the envelope and see which ones you can successfully combine.

I'm happy that peplum is still popular.  The look is so flattering for any body type!  I feel like it is going to become one of those classic looks that is around for a long time.

What I'm Wearing
Top ~ NY & Co (similar here and here)
Shorts ~ WHBM (almost identical)
Earrings ~ Francesca's (similar)
Sandals ~ Bongo (similar)
Bag ~ Kate Spade (similar)

Art Car Parade

In my challenge to myself to show how cool Houston is as a city, I present to you one of the coolest events (in my opinion) that Houston has: the Art Car Parade.  The annual Art Car Parade is the highlight of a 3-day celebration of art and cars.  It is a weird but really cool event.  There is an art car museum in the Heights area where they house some of these crazy cars year-round and anyone can go and check them out for free.  This year's parade was last Saturday and was the 27th annual one.  People from all over North America bring their cool cars to show off - and Houston has become the art car capital of the world.

Anyone with a car or anything with a set of wheels, including bikes and scooters, etc, can enter the parade.  It is really neat to see what creativity people have.  I was going to try to narrow down these photos to about a dozen, but there were too many unique and interesting cars, so I apologize for how many pics there are in this post, but they are all worth checking out.  :)  Also, if you are looking at this from an email, be sure to check it out online to see the videos.

Some cars showed a lot of thought in the design.

Opera singer!

Others looked like they just threw a bunch of crap on the cars, haha

There were over 1000 tennis balls on this truck

There were lots of modified bikes and even wheel barrows!

Outhouse cars, hehe

All of them were unique and interesting!

Crazy Cat Lady Car ;)

Fred Flintstone!

Luchadores

This spider car is so freaky

Sock Monkey car

The zebra crew had a whole entourage!

The Idaho Potato truck made an appearance - it was huge!

Remember School House Rock?!

These bikes held a swing!

This car had a mini halfpipe in the back for skateboarders

Scary T-Rex

Even some city garbage trucks got in on the action!

These next couple were creepy - check out the videos to see just how freaky they looked in action.

The beer mosaic was made with beer bottle caps

Redneck Barbie Boat, haha

I hope you enjoyed checking out all the cool art cars from the parade!  Houston truly is a unique city. :)
