Fall Roundup: Pumpkin Patch and Halloween

I'm only 2 weeks late to post about our Halloween (oops!), so I decided to make this a post about Fall in general. :)

Madison and I dressed up as foxes for Halloween. She was absolutely adorable in her costume!

We spent Halloween with some good friends (our babies were born only one day apart!) and the little ones had fun hanging out...and banging on the window, haha. Look at that cute little tail!

We went to a pumpkin patch last week. I have enjoyed doing that before, but it's so much more fun with a baby! I can't wait until she's old enough to get excited about going. Holidays are going to be like that too and I'm really looking forward to celebrating with her.

Here are a few pictures from our time there (of course they are all of Madison). She's getting better at standing without assistance, but she's not walking yet.

She kept trying to eat the corn kernels. I love how blue her eyes look here.

She loved the goats! I think they reminded her of our dogs.

By the way, how creepy does this scene look? It reminded me of something straight out of a horror movie, so of course I couldn't resist taking a picture and sharing the creepiness with you all.

I know this has kind of turned into a baby documentary blog, but I promise I will be featuring some fashion soon! :)

Madison Jean - Part II

I hope you enjoyed reading about Madison's birth story. It was a challenging experience, but ultimately so worth it. She is amazing and it's fun to see her growing each day. This post is about some random things about Madison and my postpartum recovery.

Madison was the only name that I suggested that Marty liked. I had a decent list of baby girl names that I liked and tried to convince Marty to like, but Madison is the only one that he would agree to. We were thinking about finding one more name that we both liked and then seeing which one fit her best once we saw her, but we couldn't find another name, haha. So Madison won and I think it fits her perfectly. We originally had a different middle name picked out, but I started wondering if we should do a family name instead. I originally didn't care to do that, so I'm not sure where along the line I changed my mind. Maybe it was because her middle name worked out so perfectly. Marty's grandmother's name was Jean and my grandmother's middle name was Jeanne, so we decided to have Jean as her middle name. I love that it's different and still sounds so beautiful together. And we can call her MJ if we want. We'll probably go with Maddy, but I guess we'll see what sticks. :)

Madison was about 6 lbs when we left the hospital (babies tend to lose some weight right after they are born) and by her 2 week appointment she had gotten back to her birth weight of 6.5 lbs. Now at 5 weeks, she's about 7.5 lbs. I can definitely tell a difference in her face - she's getting chubbier cheeks like her mom. :) She has started cooing and being a little more interactive. I'm looking forward to when she'll start smiling more!

Recovery from the c-section has been surprisingly easier than I expected. I was on bedrest for a couple days following the surgery but by the time we left the hospital I was able to walk a couple laps around the hospital floor. I've been trying to do a daily walk since. I really think that helped me recover faster. Now at 5 weeks postpartum, I feel almost completely normal. I still have about 15 pounds to lose, but I'm not sweating it. I'm breastfeeding and that is burning lots of calories! Hopefully that weight will come off before I know it.

There are 2 products that I'm wearing that will hopefully help my body bounce back to pre-pregnancy form. The first is the Shrinkx Hip Compression Belt. It fits low around the hips and helps pull them back together after being widened from pregnancy. The hormone relaxin is in a woman's body throughout pregnancy and for about 6 weeks postpartum. It helps the joints relax (hence the name) and stretch to accommodate the growing belly. It also allows your body to be manipulated back into place postpartum, which the belt uses to narrow your hips. My doula also used this to her advantage for my 2 postpartum massages - they were the weirdest and coolest massages as I could feel her moving things back into place, especially with my ribs and hips. The next item is the Belly Bandit Tummy Wrap. It's supposed to help pull my tummy back into place. I wish I had taken photos of my belly right before delivery and each week after to see how my progress is going, but I thought of it too late. Maybe next time I can do that. As long as I can fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans, I'll be happy. :)

Madison has been doing pretty good at night. She doesn't like to sleep by herself yet, so we currently use a cosleeper. She usually sleeps from 1 or 2 until 4:30 or 5. It almost feels like a full night's sleep, and with a nap or two during the day, I don't feel too sleep deprived. The morning is always the hardest time to wake up when she wants to eat though. I've never been a morning person! However, I've always kind of been a night owl, so staying up until 1 hasn't been hard for me. I need to start working on getting to bed earlier though, otherwise it's going to be a nightmare when I return to work and need to get up after Madison's morning feeding instead of going back to sleep.

Maternity leave has been awesome. I can't believe it's about half over. Time needs to slow down - I'm dreading when I have to start taking Madison to daycare. Until then though, I'm going to enjoy my days with her and our afternoon nap time snuggles. :)

Madison Jean

Baby girl is here! Actually yesterday marked 5 weeks since she was born! I can't believe it's been that long already - time is flying.  I've been meaning to get this post up about her for the past month, but time kept getting away from me. I also am not very efficient with my time, something that I had heard happens after you have a child, but I hadn't quite comprehended how that worked. I understand and empathize with all moms now! :) Being a mom is the best (it's still weird to think of myself as mom, haha) and I just can't get enough of my beautiful little girl.

Anyhow, I'm so excited to finally have this post done and to share more about our little baby girl! Madison Jean was born January 20th at 10:12pm weighing in at 6 lbs 8 oz and measuring 19 inches long. She was born with a full head of hair and the cutest little face ever. She was so tiny and has the most delicate features. It was love at first sight for Marty and me. I don't know if I can put into words how it felt when I saw and held Madison for the first time. Here she is not long after she was born:

Birth Story
The birth story is a little long but I hope you find it interesting enough to read it all. Writing about this is a little difficult. I had a birth plan in mind, but I also knew to have an open mind about how things could go since this was my first time and I really didn't know what to expect. Even still, things ended up going very differently than I had anticipated.

My plan was to go as long as I could all natural, without any pain medicine, and hopefully make it all the way through delivery. My doula was going to be there to help me through the process. My only concern was that I was getting induced* and I had heard that contractions are way more intense and painful when induced - I worried about being mentally strong enough to make it through without painkillers. I was keeping an open mind though because in the end, having an epidural would be fine. There'd be no reason to make myself suffer if I couldn't handle the pain and it's not like there's a prize for making it through all natural. It was just something I wanted to do if I could.

*Side note about why I was getting induced: baby girl had measured small throughout the pregnancy and my dr and the high-risk dr both were concerned about how efficient the placenta and umbilical cord were at delivering nutrients to her and didn't want to risk going past my due date in case she wasn't getting enough nourishment. I wished I could've been able to go into labor naturally and I feel like things would've gone better if I had, but oh well. Baby girl was born healthy and that's what really matters.

Tuesday morning, on January 20th, we headed to the hospital. It was kind of weird since I had always envisioned that we would be rushing like you see in the movies. I was calm with just a tiny bit of nerves that I was trying to ignore. I remember it was ridiculously foggy that morning and traffic was bad. We made it to the hospital without incident and were all checked in and settled in our room by 9:00am. At 9:30 they started the pitocin. I could feel the contractions, but they weren't painful at all. Marty and I hung out and watched a movie while we were waiting for things to start happening. At 12:30 my dr arrived, checked me (I was 3cm dilated with 70% effacement), and broke my water. Let me tell you, it is the weirdest thing ever! Sorry TMI, but I couldn't believe how much liquid came out and continued to come out with each contraction. I swear I lost about 10 lbs in water weight right there, ha! After they broke my water I started to feel some discomfort when the contractions occurred.

The contractions continued to get more intense and painful. I labored for about 7 hours naturally and then decided that it was just too much for me and I wanted an epidural. The relief I felt after I got it was indescribable. We were hoping that my body relaxing from the epidural would help me move along more. I was stuck at 5cm dilated at that point.

Unfortunately, once I got the epidural, baby girl's heart rate began to decelerate. They stopped the pitocin to see if that would help and it did - her heart rate returned to normal. Sometimes pitocin will get your body to labor on its own once it gets started. That was not the case for me. Once the pitocin was stopped, my contractions stopped. Without the contractions I wouldn't dilate any further and I couldn't have a baby at only 5 cm. They started up the pitocin again, slowly adding more, but baby girl wasn't liking it and her heart rate went down again. They tried this 3 times and every time her heart rate decelerated. It was frustrating. They weren't sure if it was too much stress on baby girl or if she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her somewhere. It made me regret not trying to tough it out longer without the epidural since the issue didn't come up until after.

Since we weren't making any progress (and once they break your water you are on a time limit to have the baby), the only other option was to have a c-section. I was devastated. Here I was, originally wanting to do a natural birth, and I would have to have a c-section. It was the worst possible outcome and one that I didn't think would ever be in the realm of possibilities. :( Once I finally accepted that it had to be done, they prepped me and moved me to the OR.

Some say that you can feel a tugging sensation when you have a c-section, but I didn't feel anything. I just remember being very thirsty and occasionally shaking like I was cold, even though I didn't really feel cold (I found out that was from the medication and normal). The entire procedure was short, taking maybe 30 minutes. I'll never forget when I first heard her cry. I wanted to hold her right away but they made me wait until they cleaned her first. I finally got some skin-to-skin time, but only for a few minutes before they took me away to the recovery area. I wish I had been more demanding of getting that skin-to-skin time to bond right after they pulled her out, but the whole thing was a whirlwind and I was exhausted. After spending about an hour in recovery we finally were taken to our room. It seemed like an eternity before they brought baby girl back to me to hold. By the time I got her I think it was after midnight. It was surreal to hold her in my arms. My beautiful little miracle, my sweet baby Madison. I was completely exhausted, but I forced myself to stay awake so I could hold her just a little longer.

So even though I was disappointed that I had to have a c-section, I was so happy that Madison was born healthy and that I didn't have any complications from the surgery.

Since this post is already very long, I will end it here and have more about Madison in tomorrow's post (it's already typed up and scheduled to go so it will definitely get posted tomorrow). :)

Pregnancy Update: 40 Weeks

I guess I was just joking when I said I wouldn't have an update for you this week!  Haha.  Baby girl decided she was just too cozy and didn't want to come out yet.  So, today is my original due date and also my induction date - hopefully as you read this, I will be in the hospital getting ready for baby girl's arrival!  We are so excited and cannot wait to meet her!

Marty and I both took the day off from work yesterday and enjoyed spending our last baby-free day together.  We hung out for part of the day with a couple that is really good friends of ours that are also expecting and getting induced this evening.  I have a feeling our babies will be good friends. :)

We also took a few maternity pics yesterday - our last ones with the baby bump!  Our next pictures will include our precious baby girl.

Pregnancy Update: Week 39

This will probably be my last baby bump picture.  By 40 weeks, I will have a baby!  It is unreal that I will be holding baby girl in less than a week.  It really hasn't hit me yet.

I saw the high-risk doctor to get one last ultrasound done to make sure baby girl was gaining enough weight (since there were those inconsistencies with the ultrasound measurements previously) and she looked good!  She was measuring to be about 6 lbs 3 oz.  That is a good size if you ask me, but the doctor was a little concerned that she is on the small side.  So she recommended that I get induced if baby girl isn't here by her due date.  I saw my regular dr today and we set the induction date for January 20th, my original due date.

There is a decent chance baby girl might come before then.  At the end of my appointment they put 2 monitors on me.  One checked the baby's heartbeat and one measured contractions.  From what I could tell, I hadn't felt any contractions, but according to the monitors I was having fairly regular ones!  I'm glad they had me sit with the monitors so I could feel the difference in my body when it was going through a contraction.  Even though they were happening about every 5 minutes, they weren't nearly as strong as they need to be nor were they lasting very long, so it's not real labor yet! :)

The Nursery

I'm so excited to finally share some nursery pictures (and to pretty much be done with setting it up!).  I did gray, yellow, and pink as my colors with an elephant and polka dot theme.  I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

This was my inspiration photo.  I loved the bold stripes and how dramatic the overall look was.  The final result is quite a bit different (we decided against doing stripes unfortunately) but you can see some elements from the inspiration photo in our nursery.

{Inspiration photo via Pinterest}

And here is our nursery!

As soon as we decide on her name, I'm going to get a white wooden letter of her first initial to put in between the elephant pictures below.  On top of the changing pad is a super cute diaper cake that my awesome coworker and friend Christen made for me.  She is super talented.  She also made these amazing sugar cookies for my work shower.  I will share those pics in another post.

At some point I'm going to have to take the cake apart, but it's too cute and I'm putting it off.  So it's just hanging out on the changing pad for now.

Since I kinda took over the closet in the baby's room, we decided to get the small wardrobe for extra storage. :)  It will be something that she can use as she gets older too.

We found the exact same light fixture in the inspiration photo at Ikea, but Marty didn't think it would provide enough light for the room.  We found this similar one at Home Depot and it provides a lot more light.  Bonus: it was half the price too!

Pregnancy Update: Weeks 34 - 38

I have been slacking in my update posts!  So here is a month's worth of news and photos.  At least I have been good about taking the weekly photos. :)

As I mentioned in the last post, I suspected baby girl had moved into a head down position.  That was confirmed by the doctor.  So now she is in the right position for birth, and I hope she stays that way.  My biggest fear is that she'll move into a breech position, but honestly I don't think there is enough room for her to move back.

I had my last 2 baby showers during my 35th week: my Houston family and friends shower and one at work.  My dear friend Laura made the wreath below ~ isn't it amazing?!  I can't wait to take a picture of baby girl in front of it when she gets here!  We got lots of goodies at the showers and I'm still working on organizing them into the nursery.  Both showers were beautiful.  I am so spoiled by my friends and family.  I will post some baby shower pics in a future post.

Basically at this point, baby girl is packing on as much fat as she can and her lungs and brain are finishing their development.  Everything else is just about ready to go!  It was reassuring to make it to this point since babies have a high survival rate if anything were to happen and she had to be born early.

Over the past 3 weeks we finished all of our baby classes.  We took infant CPR, the hospital birthing class, and a breastfeeding class.  They were all really informative and we had great instructors.  I feel a little bit better about how everything is going to go with this new knowledge! :)

Now that I'm down to the last month, I have to start visiting the doctor every week.  It is crazy how often it feels like I have dr appointments.  At 36 weeks she checked me and I was not dilated - not surprising.

At my last doctor appointment (37 weeks) the doctor checked again and I am 1 cm dilated!  (So exciting, haha.)  So technically that means I am in the first stage of labor.  From what I learned in birthing class, women can be in this stage of labor for over a month.  It really doesn't mean anything until active labor starts.  Marty loves the idea of telling people that I am in labor already.  He is so silly. :)

I love the shirt I'm wearing above.  It says "Tis the season to be pregnant."  It would get a good amount of chuckles whenever I wore it.  It's a bummer the holidays are over, because it was one of my most comfortable shirts.  At 37 weeks, I am technically at full term, although the next 3 weeks are still important for baby girl's brain and lung development.

Eek ~ as of yesterday, I am 38 weeks and only have about 2 weeks left!  It is unreal how fast this journey has gone by.  I'm still comfortable for the most part and am not in any rush to start labor, ha.  I got a labor prep massage last Friday with my doula.  It helps open and loosen the hips to facilitate easier passage for the baby.  My doula said that my hips are tight and that I really need to work on loosening them before baby comes.  So I've been doing different stretches on my exercise ball each night.  I have another labor prep massage this Friday, so hopefully I have good news that my stretching has made a difference.  Having looser hips will help labor go faster, so I want to get them as loose as possible! :)

I know I promised nursery pics in my last post, but we are not quite done yet and I want to finish up the last couple of things before posting pics.  We are going to try to finish it up tonight, and if we do, I will have pics for you tomorrow!  I'm so excited to share it with you!

One last thing ~ some of you have asked if we have picked out a name yet.  We have a couple that we like, but have not decided on one yet.  We are probably going to wait until we see her to make the final decision.  So, you will find out her name when she makes her debut!

Pregnancy Update: Weeks 31 - 33

I am finally down to single digit weeks left.  It is unreal.  Everything is still going along pretty well.  Her kicks have gotten more powerful and her feet are right where my muscle tear is on my right side; and wouldn't you know, that seems to be her favorite place to kick. :(  Usually it's not too bad but every once in a while she will do a hard kick that catches me off-guard and it hurts!

We had another ultrasound between 31 and 32 weeks.  It is crazy how much bigger she looks and with all the added fat her face is starting to look more like a baby face and not a skeleton.  The growth looked good, but the doc is still having me get one more ultrasound this week just to make sure.  I shouldn't complain that I've had to get so many ultrasounds because it's awesome to see her so often, but it's annoying to schedule the appointments and take the extra time for them.  And I think it's fairly obvious from my stomach that she is still growing, haha.

I finally got a prenatal massage over Thanksgiving weekend.  It was awesome!  I noticed the next day that my legs were almost back to normal with no signs of swelling too!  The swelling has been minimal, so it wasn't a drastic difference, but it was still nice to see them looking better.

I mentioned in my last post that I was looking for a doula.  I found one and I am so excited about it.  She comes highly recommended and her specialty is massage (hallelujah!).  I had never heard of a doula before becoming pregnant.  I remember reading an article about pregnancy after I had just found out I was expecting and it mentioned something about a doula.  It wasn't much information and my curiosity took over and I googled it.  At first I thought it sounded like some weird thing a hippie would use at birth (no offense to hippies, but you get my drift, ha), but the more I read about doulas, the less skeptical I became.  I tucked that info away in the back of my mind as something to look into later in the pregnancy.  Then I began hearing about doulas randomly through friends of friends, when they'd mention how awesome they were on Facebook and how they couldn't imagine giving birth without one.  I kept hearing more and more positive things about them that finally I knew that I wanted a doula to help me survive labor.  Plus, they are great with helping the spouse know what to do to help his wife during labor, and I think my hubby could benefit from that. :)  I will definitely be sharing my opinion on how it goes with the doula when everything is done.

The last couple of days I think I have experienced some Braxton Hicks contractions.  They can start occurring as early as 30 weeks (and sometimes earlier) and are believed to help your body practice for the real thing.  They don't hurt and it feels like my stomach is tightening during them.  I thought it was the baby moving the first few times I felt them, but then it dawned on me that it was BH contractions.  It really is no big deal though, at least right now since they have only happened a couple times a day.  I heard that they occur more often as you get closer to your due date and can get really annoying.  We shall see.

One last thing to mention is that I think baby girl has finally moved to the head down position.  For the entire pregnancy she has been laying in a transverse position (left to right instead of up and down, if that makes sense) and so I would feel her kicks and arm movements on the sides of my belly.  It was also the reason the ultrasound technicians were having a hard time getting accurate measurements on her growth.  The last couple of days she has been pushing hard on my right side and it was very uncomfortable, especially with the muscle tear on that side.  I thought it felt like she might be turning but I wasn't sure.  Then yesterday morning I noticed the movements were more at the top and bottom of my belly instead of the sides and my belly was less wide (kinda weird).  It's great because I felt like she was getting too big to be laying transverse and that my belly wouldn't stretch out that wide any more!  Haha.  I will be able to confirm her position at the ultrasound this Friday.  I just hope she is head down and not breach, but I'm pretty sure she is because I have felt hiccups in the lower part of my belly.

Wow, this post turned into a novel!  I will save the rest for the next post. :)  Also, the next post will contain pictures of the nursery!  It's not quite done yet, but it's coming together quite nicely and I can't wait to share.  That gives you something to look forward to in the next pregnancy post!
